Russia has vetoed a draft United Nations resolution condemningthe 1995 massacre at Srebrenica as an act of genocide. Thekillings took place during the Bosnian war. The U.N. SecurityCouncil vote was 10-1 with four abstentions. Samantha Poweris the U.N. ambassador—U. S. ambassador to the U.N.
“Twenty years ago, the international community failed to protect the people taking refuge inSrebrenica and the result was genocide. Today because of Russia’s refusal to call what happenedin Srebrenica by its rightful name—genocide—the council is again failing to live up to itsresponsibility.”
British Ambassador Peter Wilson said his government is outraged by Russia's veto.
