absence，defect，lack，want 指必要或必须之物的匮乏或欠缺。
absence：“缺乏”，意义最为明确，表示完全缺乏某物，也可指某物非常缺少或根本没有，亦可指人的缺席。
We were obliged to accept it as true in the absence of adequate evidence. 我在缺乏足够证据的情况下，只好把它看成真的。
defect：“缺陷. 瑕疵”，指某事物缺乏完整性或效率，因而无法达到完美境界或充分发挥作用。
High officials in the Department of Education have found some grave defects in the present system of education. 教育部的高级官员们发现现行教育制度中的一些严重缺点。
lack：“缺乏、缺少” 指某个环境中货物全部或部分缺少，lack 所表示的缺乏程度范围也较广。
The young man displayed a complete lack of courtesy in dealing with his employer. “这青年人在与他的雇主打交道时漫现得完全缺乏礼貌。”
want：“缺乏、缺少”，指必需、需要或盼望得到的东西部分或全部的缺少。因此，“手术后毫无痛苦” 可以说：complete lack of pain after the operation 却不能说：complete want of pain after the operation.
The houses were falling to pieces for want of care and a little paint. 那间房屋因无妥善保养和油漆而倒塌。
